How to read it
An inflow means the fund issued new shares and bought bitcoin for them; an outflow means it redeemed shares and sold coins. Amounts are in dollars at the day's valuation.
Flows move with the price, not ahead of it: in 66% of sessions the sign of the day's total matched bitcoin's move that same day, and in only 51% the next day's — close to a coin toss. Computed over 705 sessions.
GBTC is a special case: until January 2024 it was a closed-end trust charging 1.5%, and $28.05B has left it since launch. Most of that money moved to the neighbouring funds rather than leaving the market.
When the numbers appear
Funds report the total after the New York close. A session's figures arrive in the evening of the same day (UTC) and are sometimes revised the next morning; the page updates by itself.
Questions and answers
What is a bitcoin ETF inflow?
Money investors put into a fund in a day beyond what they withdrew. To issue new shares the fund buys bitcoin for that amount and keeps it with a custodian, so an inflow is a real purchase of coins and an outflow is a sale.
Which spot bitcoin ETFs trade in the US?
There are 13 now: the largest is BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), followed by funds from Fidelity, Grayscale, Bitwise, ARK and 21Shares, VanEck, Franklin Templeton, Invesco and Galaxy, CoinShares, WisdomTree, Morgan Stanley and Hashdex.
Do inflows predict price rises?
No. The sign of the daily total matches bitcoin's move that same day in 66% of sessions and the next day's in 51% — close to a coin toss. Flows show what big money has already done, not what it will do tomorrow.
Why are there no ether or solana ETFs here?
There is no open source yet that permits showing their data. When one appears we will add it the same way, with the source credited.
